Ten Most Common Dashboard Lights
It's never a good sign when you see a light pop up on your dashboard. With so many symbols, it can be hard to know what they all mean.
If you don't know what a certain light means, we're here to help! At Milton Ruben Chevrolet, we want to make your auto experience as easy as possible. Below, we've outlined the most common dashboard lights.
Warning Lights Vs. Indicator Lights
Two types of lights may light up your dashboard: warning or indicator lights. Warning lights are serious and should be taken care of right away. Indicator lights let you know that something needs to be serviced or repaired soon, so drive carefully. Check your owner's manual for any questions you may have about the color or urgency of a light.
So What Do They Mean?
Check Engine or Malfunction Indicator Light
You'll see this light when there's an engine problem, and it may lead to the system operating abnormally. Bring your vehicle to the service department as soon as possible.
Coolant Temperature Warning Light
This light tells you that the engine temperature is higher than normal. Stop the vehicle to let the engine cool down, if necessary, and then have it inspected immediately.
Oil Pressure Warning Light
You'll know your oil level is low if you see this light. Stop the vehicle right away and check your oil level.
Battery/Charging Warning Light
This light may indicate problems with your battery. Faulty wiring or a broken fan belt may be the cause. Stop and get professional help immediately.
Door Ajar Indicator Light
If you see this light, a door or the trunk is partially open. Check each door and trunk before you drive on.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System Light
Your tire pressure is low when this light illuminates. After you adjust the inflation pressure, the light should turn off in a few minutes.
Brake System Light
This light can tell you several different things: the parking brake is on, there is a problem with the braking system, brake fluid is low or there is an ABS problem. Check the parking brake first and then have the brake fluid checked.
Traction Control Indicator Light
Your vehicle's traction control is in use when you see this light, indicating that conditions are slippery.
Security Indicator Light
If this light comes on and no security issue can be found, there is probably a malfunction in the system.
Cruise Control Indicator Light
This light shows that cruise control is on.
